Fancy Ape® begins with ideas rather than a fixed medium or style. A question, observation, problem, joke, image, or curiosity can become the starting point. From there, the idea is investigated and given the form that serves it best.
The Idea Is The Art.
Every work starts somewhere: a question, observation, problem, contradiction, curiosity, or ridiculous thought.
The idea is researched, challenged, compared, sketched, or simply pushed far enough to discover what is actually interesting about it.
Different ways of expressing the idea are considered. The answer might be a drawing, photograph, diagram, digital composition, painting, object, text, or combination.
The idea is developed into the form that best carries it. The medium follows the concept — not the other way around.
The finished work is identified and recorded so the artifact retains its title, context, medium, dimensions, edition information when applicable, and relationship to the underlying idea.
These are not categories an artwork must fit into. They are tools Fancy Ape can use individually or together.
The first mark. Rough thinking, handwriting, studies, revisions, annotations, and unfinished possibilities.
The visual field. Photography, illustration, painting, digital composition, collage, generated imagery, or combinations of them.
Relationships made visible. Structure, sequence, measurement, comparison, movement, systems, and spatial logic.
Language as part of the work. Questions, observations, titles, instructions, fragments, data, or narrative.
The idea made physical. Objects, models, reliefs, prints, constructions, fabricated pieces, and other material expressions.
Fancy Ape works may be released as originals, editions, prints, objects, or other physical formats depending on the idea and how it is meant to exist.
Individual artwork pages provide the specifications that actually apply to that work, including available size, material, edition status, and presentation options.
Explore the WorkA finished object is only part of the work. Fancy Ape also preserves the information that gives it context: what the work is called, when it was made, what it is made from, how it was developed, and — when relevant — where the underlying idea came from.
